Role Models: The Key Ingredient for Support a Wellbeing (Coral)

As a first-generation student, every step I took was shrouded in uncertainty. Yet, there was no denying the overwhelming feeling of isolation and confusion that gripped me, but that was before I was encouraged to seek out a mentor.

A mentor is a seasoned and trusted guide who shares their knowledge, experience, and wisdom to support and empower others in their personal or professional development journey.  In honor of Women’s Appreciation Month, I want to share how the remarkable women who have served as mentors in my life have transformed my path and explore the profound benefits of mentorship.

Supporting Your Mental Wellbeing

The influence of mentors on my life journey has been incredibly significant. As a STEM major, the weight of academic and personal challenges often threatened to overwhelm me. In moments of doubt, stress, and uncertainty, my mentors were steadfast pillars of support, providing invaluable guidance and inspiration.

Their wisdom not only equipped me with practical skills for academic success but also instilled in me the confidence to advocate for myself and others. Through their example, I learned to navigate life's complexities with resilience and grace. I remember the stress-reducing exercises taught by one mentor,  the enlightening, honest conversations I would have in regard to women’s struggles in the academic environment and in the world.

Having mentors open up, share joys, and support me helped me feel less alone; these experiences encouraged me to take actions to persevere no matter what stressors I was facing or obstacles I needed to overcome. I gained encouragement and motivation to not only succeed in my life endeavors, but inspiration to do more and find the passions in my life to create large positive changes. I cannot be thankful enough for having strong female role models I can relate to and help support me during tough times. Having mentors can not only help you reach your goals, but to dream up bigger aspirations and strive to become strong, incredible individuals within your community and continue to do good for.

How Do You Get a Mentor?

Securing a mentor may seem daunting, but they can come from anywhere and be anywhere! Reflect on your goals and aspirations, and seek out individuals whose experiences align with your aspirations.

Find ways to grow a relationship with them, whether that be coming to office hours, or politely asking them if you can stay in touch and exchange contact information (such as email).  Approach potential mentors humbly and sincerely, asking them to expand on shared insights and perspectives. There are also many programs, internships, and events that encourage you to share information for the very reason of gaining a mentor (like LAD’s Internship program!). There are many people who are looking for people to pass their knowledge on to, so don't be discouraged in your journey of finding the right mentorships for you.

In every arena, from board meetings to scientific laboratories, female mentors have forged paths and broken down barriers, serving as beacons of inspiration for generations to come. By nurturing mentorship opportunities for everyone and acknowledging the impact of remarkable female role models in our lives, we can pave the way for generations to come!
